Before

  • Measure the room, the doorways and the turn at the top of the stairs.
  • Check the product weight and plan for two people on anything over about 50 lb.
  • Find the studs where tall pieces will stand.
  • Pick a cool part of the day in summer. A hot garage is a poor place to build furniture.
  • Gather the tool kit.

During

  • Inventory every part. Photograph the hardware bags.
  • Sort hardware into cups by type.
  • Dry-fit before final tightening.
  • Hand-tighten cams and screws; no full-torque drill.
  • Measure both diagonals before fixing the back panel.

After

  • No rocking, doors and drawers aligned.
  • Tip-over restraint fitted (how-to).
  • Spare parts bagged and taped inside the piece with the manual.
  • Packaging broken down promptly; cardboard stacks in garages give pests shelter.
  • Calendar reminder to re-tighten in four to six weeks.

Central Valley notes

Valley homes see long, hot, dry summers and damp, foggy winters. Particleboard pieces near swamp coolers, laundry rooms or exterior doors should be kept off wet floors and checked for swelling at the cut edges. In garages, combine new shelving with the storage practices that keep pests out.
